South Dakota 2: Devils Tower, Deadwood

Let me start by saying.... Devils Tower is incredible. Pictures do not do it justice at all. It was on my list of places to go on this trip but we were not 100% sure we were going to attempt it.  It was a 2 hr drive from our hotel and with the 19 hr drive we had just done I just didn't think it was worth it. Thankfully we talked ourselves into it.  Well worth it. It was 2 of my kids favorite thing we did.

Not only is the actual tower amazing but there are massive rocks stacked up beneath it that are a climbers paradise.

There is an Indian story that says the rock was formed when some girls were playing and a bear started to come after them. The girls climbed on the rock and prayed to their gods to save them. The rock started growing.  In the bears attempt to reach them he created massive holes in the rock from his claws. There is a picture hanging in the visitor center depicted the story.

Jojo with his super human strength!

There were crazy people rock climbing it.  We all stood in amazement that people are actually brave enough to climb to the top of it. We found out later that a 91 year old man had successfully climbed to the top with his sons. Incredible.

Deadwood was next on our adventure and one that we were all super excited to see. Unfortunately it was a really big disappointment to us. I am not sure where it fell short. I guess I thought it would have more historical stuff and not as much casino/salon stuff. It pretty much was a street full of casinos and bars. Family friendly of course, but we still didn't want our kids in any of it. So we walked the street and then went into the site that Wild Bill was shot and killed. We also bought Jojo a shotgun that he proudly carried around the rest of the trip.

After we toured downtown we took the kids to the cemetery where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane were buried. Don't think we didn't watch the musical "Calamity Jane" in the bus on the way up there!

Even though it wasn't what we expected we still had a great time.
